Maine Time Banks
is a statewide branch of the national Time Dollars movement.
Time Dollars is not just another good idea.
This revolutionary, grassroots movement is breathing new life into
communities from the US to England and Japan! Time Dollar programs are
connecting neighbors and helping to bridge the growing disparities in
education, economic opportunity and quality of life. The concept is
simple. Members help themselves by helping others. You help a neighbor in
need and earn one credit for every hour offered. The person you helped is
debited one credit hour that they have earned helping someone else. One
hour of service equals one credit, regardless of the service. A computer
program helps to schedule services and to track the credits earned.
Members of Time Dollar organizations help each other in ways that family
and neighbors have traditionally done. Inspired by Dr. Edgar Cahn, Author
of Time Dollars, the movement is sweeping the nation. And Maine has become
a leader - creating a successful Time Dollar Model in one of Portland's
oldest, most diverse and most at - risk neighborhoods. We have begun to
replicate the Model throughout Maine, and New England.
