Communities for Children and Youth, in collaboration with The Muskie School of Public Service, is seeking applications from organizations across Maine that can effectively utilize a full-time AmeriCorps*VISTA member to address anti-poverty initiatives focused on children, youth, and/or seniors.

AmeriCorps*VISTA members are individuals who volunteer a year of their lives to serve full-time with non-profit organizations or government agencies.  Created in 1964 and modeled after the Peace Corps, AmeriCorps*VISTA’s mission is to support community-led initiatives that alleviate and eliminate poverty.

According to Project Coordinator, Chip Curry, of the Muskie School of Public Service, “We expect to place AmeriCorps*VISTA members with approximately fifty organizations by August 2008.  Combined, this represents an investment of 1.5 million dollars in child, youth, and senior anti-poverty initiatives.”

This AmeriCorps*VISTA Project is a collaboration between Communities for Children and Youth and the University of Southern Maine’s Muskie School of Public Service.  Funding for this project comes from the Corporation for National and Community Service.

The goal of the AmeriCorps*VISTA Project is to partner with 50 organizations.  To that end, applications are being received on a rolling basis (until filled).  For more information and application instructions, call 1-866-385-8124.
